Aleurites moluccana is the state tree of Hawaii. Also referred to Kukui Nut Tree, Candleberry Tree, Candlenut Tree, Indian Walnut, or Varnish Tree is found in many tropical regions. Considered highly ornamental it can reach 65 feet or more at maturity and have wide spreading branches. This tree thrives in moist tropical regions and tolerates a range of soils, temperature and moisture levels. With a fairly aggressive growth rate, it will produce fruit within 5-10 years of planting.
Noted for light green/silvery foliage and numerous sprays of creamy white fragrant blooms, The Kukui Tree produces a fleshy fruit containing nuts which are prized for their high oil content and ability to burn about 15 minutes, hence the nickname candlenut.
Choose an area of full sunlight anticipating the mature tree to span up to 25 feet. Ideally prefers slightly acidic fertile soil, although it can tolerate most soil types in a humid area that has a well-drained and medium moisture soil.
